Although Taulman618 has excellent thermal and mechanical properties, we did not select this material for further analyse as its improved version, Taulman645, had even better properties.

> Conclusion

In the table above, the advised printing temperature is 245°C, with a heated bed of 30 to 65°C [4]. Amateur users determined that the best prints were achieved for a temperature range of 240-255°C. The use of a heated bed is also strongly recommended, at this type of nylon is more prone to shrinkage [5].

When printed at the correct temperature, nylon filaments present an excellent bonding upon printing, rendering the printed object even more tough than ABS or PLA prints. Therefore, nylon is often used to print gear, and also because of its "slippery" finish. Taulman618 is also odour neutral and chemically resistant, meaning it could be used for printing out molds [5]. Another popular use for nylon concerns medical applications, like prostheses for example [4]. It is also possible to add nylon-compatible dyes to the filaments, making it possible to print colourful object [5].

> Properties

Taulman618 is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a glass temperature of 48°C. It has excellent thermal properties, degrading only at 335°C [4].

Nylon is known to be a strong, light, flexible and wear resistant material. Indeed, Taulman618 has better mechanical properties than conventional 3D printing filaments like ABS or PLA [5].

The table below details all the thermal, mechanical and physical properties of Taulman 618. [4]

Taulman 618 is the first (and longest) marketed nylon 3D printing filament from Taulman 3D. Taulman618 is made of high quality polyamide 6,6 (-[-CO(CH2)4-CONHCH2)6-]n-) [1]. This type of nylon is processed by making adipic acid (HOOC(CH2)4COOH) react with hexamethylenediamine (H2N(CH2)6NH2) [2,3]. This reaction is a condensation polymerisation. A detailed description of this polymerisation is available here.
